A gummy smile is most often caused by overactivity in the muscles that control the upper lip, mainly the muscle called musculus levator labii superioris alaeque nasi,. When you smile, this muscle pulls the upper lip much higher than normal, exposing a large part of the gum above the front teeth.

Aftercare following a Botox treatment for a gummy smile is mainly about two things: keeping the product precisely in the injected muscles and minimising the risk of bruising. Because Botox is a liquid when it's injected, it can migrate (move) to the surrounding muscles during the first few hours if you're not careful. If Botox moves in this area, it can affect the muscles that control the corners of the mouth, which can result in a crooked smile or drooping mouth corners. Correct aftercare is therefore essential for a symmetrical, beautiful result. Avoid lying down for the first 4 hours. Don't rub or massage the lip. Take a break from saunas, sunbeds and strenuous exercise for 24 hours. The final result is typically visible after 5 to 10 days.
